Homemade Recipes for Dandruff

Dandruff — is an affection of the scalp of the head, involving the formation of plenty small furfures (flakes). Both women and men are equally exposed to dandruff. These white furfures look unattractive and harm hair health as well by enhancing its fragility, shedding and loss of beauty and shine.

In most cases, dandruff develops from Pityrosporum ovale fungus, which everyone has in the area of hair on their head. Body dysfunctions may activate the fungus, which leads to faster skin cells peeling and dandruff formation. In its natural condition, an epidermis cell lives for about a month, however, in the period of vigorous activity of Pityrosporum ovale — no longer than a week. Dead skin cells immediately accumulate at the hair roots, stick together with sebum to form furfures, which interfere with oil glands function and block air access to the scalp.

The Reasons of Dandruff Appearance

Despite being caused by the fungus, dandruff cannot be caught from other people, as it reflects the condition of internal processes in the organism. The following may cause dandruff:

  • Unbalanced nutrition
  • Heavy stresses and prolonged depression
  • Hormonal disruptions
  • Recrudescence of gastrointestinal diseases
  • Deficit of vitamins and microelements in the organism
  • Wrong hair care: use of shampoos, which contain aggressive surface active substances, frequent use of hair dryer, crisper, styling cosmetics, which lead to excessive scalp dryness

Types of Treatment

Dandruff treatment becomes imperative when the scalp cell renewal process accelerates sharply, resulting in new cells having no time to cornify completely, sticking together and peeling in form of visible flakes. It can be common dandruff or a symptom of other diseases (seborrhea, psoriasis, scaly skin disease). That’s the reason why the first step of dandruff treatment should always be to get a medical examination.

There are two types of dandruff treatment:

  1. Medicamental
  2. Natural (homemade)

Let’s look into both methods in detail.

Medicamental

First of all, for treating dandruff, medical shampoos should be used, which contain substances with a targeted mechanism of action. In most cases, the active substance has an antifungal effect, as excessive sebum production in seborrhea creates beneficial conditions for fungus expansion, which causes an acceleration of epidermis cells renewal.

More rarely, for dandruff treatment such shampoos are used, which are capable of slowing down epidermis cells growth and contain such substances as zinc and selenium salts and serum. There are also shampoos that are effective for removing excessive sebum and decreasing its production, which is important for treating dandruff as the symptom of seborrhea or psoriasis. They contain tar, received from black coal conversion. Dandruff treating shampoos of a new generation contain natrium ichthyol (shale oil distillate) and special mineral-protein complexes that stimulate blood circulation in the epidermis and enhance hair follicle nutrition. Usually, they contain no colorants or preservatives, therefore produce no contact allergic response or local irritation. It takes several months to treat dandruff with medical shampoos.

Dandruff treatment also includes usage of ectylotics, which encourage peeling of stubborn and hard layer furfures, for example, a 10% sulfur ointment — is rubbed into the scalp for a few days. For treating excessive sebum production it is also recommended to rub a 60% solution of sodium thiosulfate, 2% solution of salicylic acid, an alcoholic solution of Naftalan oil, Sulsen paste, etc. into of the head of hair throughout a month.

Dandruff treatment should necessarily take place together with nutrition normalization — limited consumption of fried, acrid, spicy, fatty and sweet products. All these intensify sebum synthesis. The diet should be enriched with products, rich in vitamins A, B1, B2, B6 and containing coarse fiber that normalizes digesting process and absorbs toxins. Excessively dry scalp, caused by the lack of moisture in the epidermis, may also lead to dandruff. In this case, recovering the normal water balance in the body is enough for the scalp to no longer be dry — you need to drink clean water, at room temperature (mineral, spring or melt).

Out of physiotherapeutic methods, dandruff treatment cryomassage with cryogenic nitrogen and darsonvalization of the scalp is widely used, which is beneficial to carry out before rubbing in the ectylotics.

Peelings

Salt

Salt peeling for scalp — a very simple, but effective remedy. It is better to use sea salt because it contains a substantial amount of iodine and other beneficial minerals. Such a peeling works well for exfoliating dead skin cells, improving blood circulation of the scalp, removing excess sebum and stimulating hair follicles. Salt is used in a dry form for rubbing or with any kind of diluent. This, for example, can be yogurt or basic oils in combination with essential ones. For a peeling mask, take about 4 tablespoons of salt and 200 ml of yogurt or kefir. Apply onto the skin little by little and rub with gentle massaging movements. Mustard Mask

It is very effective for treating the oily type of seborrheic dermatitis. Such mustard masks are contraindicated in case of sensitive skin and tendency to various allergic reactions. Be careful with the proportions, in order not to burn your hair accidentally. If you have split ends, be sure to add a little high-quality olive oil to the mustard mask.

To make this mask, take 15 grams of dry mustard, 50 grams of colorless henna powder, 2 tbsp. of honey, 1 egg yolk. Mix the components until you get a creamy paste. You may like to also add a few drops of any essential oil. The mustard mask for dandruff treatments should be left on the hair for approximately one hour, with your hair wrapped up in a towel. Then wash the mask off with shampoo. The proper use of this mask promotes complete removal of dandruff and makes your hair exceptionally thick and shiny.

Egg Mask

You need to mix the juice of one lemon with two egg yolks and add a dash of olive oil. Rub the resulting mixture into the scalp and hair roots thoroughly and be sure to leave it for half an hour. Then wash the mask out, without using shampoo. The procedure can be carried out once a week.

Mask with Sour Milk

Apply a glass of sour milk onto the scalp and hair throughout its entire length, then leave for half an hour under a thick towel. The mask should be washed off with warm water without using shampoo or conditioner. This mask can be applied 2-3 times a week and then as a preventive measure —once a month is a must.

Garlic Mask

Crush 6-8 medium garlic cloves and rub into the scalp. Leave for 2 hours, then wash out with shampoo.

Beet Mask

Grate one medium beet and extract the juice. Rub it into the scalp an hour prior to washing. This mask is not suitable for light hair as there is a possibility that beet will color your hair.

Hair Rinses

Vinegar

Take 1 tbsp. vinegar per liter of water and rinse your hair after washing with this solution; then rinse it with plain cold water. The hair becomes smooth and begins to have a gorgeous shine again — especially dark colors.

Lemon

Normal hair can be rinsed with diluted lemon juice — mix the juice of half a lemon with a liter of water. You will get an astonishing result — your hair will remain smooth and shiny for a long time.

Green Tea

A rinse made of a green tea infusion revitalizes weakened and damaged dry hair, suffering from dandruff. Brew tea (2 tbsp.) with a liter of boiling water, cool and rinse your hair after washing — it will become shining again.

Milk

Oily hair can be rinsed with milk. Dissolve salt (1 tsp.) in a glass of warm milk, rinse the hair with this solution after washing and then just wash it with warm clean water.

Ramie

You will need 500 ml of boiling water, 250 ml of vinegar and 3 tablespoons of dry ramie (or 6 tablespoons of fresh). Pour boiling water over the grass and leave it to infuse for at least 10 minutes. Then add vinegar to the infusion and stir. The hair rinse with nettle is ready. Use it after washing.

Chamomile

You will need 1 cup of vinegar, 3 tablespoons of dry chamomile flowers, the zest of 1 lemon and 20 drops of chamomile essential oil. Put the chamomile flowers, lemon zest, vinegar and essential oil into a jar. Leave in a warm dark place for 2 weeks. Shake the jar gently on a daily basis. Then strain the infusion, using a sieve and butter cloth, and store it in a bottle up to 6 months.

The rinse is used as follows: take 2-3 tablespoons of the infusion with a jug of warm water and rinse your hair after washing with the resulting product.

If you need to make the infusion quickly, pour boiling water over 2 tablespoons of chamomile flowers, let it infuse and strain. You can use the infusion of room temperature.

Additional Methods of Treatment

Dandruff treatment should be comprehensive. Besides using natural masks, lotions and massages, use the following tips:

  • Deny “chemicals” and hair colorants for some time. However, you can use plant-extracted colorants — they strengthen the hair and do not cause damage.
  • When washing your hair, massage your scalp with your fingertips — it facilitates the removal of dandruff flakes of the skin surface and improves blood circulation.
  • Wash all the used combs and hair picks thoroughly, every day.

You should limit the consumption of food, containing animal fats, carbohydrates, salt, and spices as well as of smoked dishes and alcohol. Your nutrition should be rich in vegetables, dairy products, and vitamins:

  • If possible, dry your hair at room temperature, try to use a hairdryer as little as you can.
  • Take a special complex of vitamins А, В, С, Е.
  • Try to sleep at least 7 hours every night.
  • Play sports and try to involve yourself in regular exercise.
